Sara Bahayi is an Afghan taxi driver who is making waves in her country for female empowerment. |
International Women's Day is about celebrating women's achievement in society. That's also a big point of our women-focused expo that will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the BWI Airport Marriott in Linthicum, Md.
So when we read in today's The Washington Post about a fearless Afghan woman--who is basically the only taxi driver in a country where most men believe women are forbidden to drive--we had to make note of it.
According to the article, 38-year-old Sara Bahayi took the opportunity to become a taxi driver to support multiple family members, despite deep resistance from cultural norms that insist women should not work. This isn't without consequence. Bahayi has received threats and an attempted break-in of her home.
But Bahayi didn't back down, instead buying a rifle to guard her house and working on creating a car dealership. She's a great example of a normal woman doing extraordinary things and inspiring others.
